PAPERMILL: Tracking an Emerging China-Nexus Malware Factory

15 September 2026 33 min read
Execution summary: DPI-aware (it LoadLibraryWs shcore.dll and resolves SetProcessDpiAwareness dynamically, with the statically-imported USER32 SetProcessDPIAware as a fallback) → check admin → if not admin, relaunch itself with the runas verb, spawn a watchdog thread that keeps re-popping UAC until the user gives in, and exit → if admin, spawn installer_thread to drop and persist, then run the anti-VM screen. (MAKE ILLUSTRATION)
The battery itself is normal. What's smart is the failure mode: instead of exiting when a check fails, which is exactly what a naive sandbox logs as suspicious, it falls into Sleep(0x493E0) (300,00 ms = 5 minutes) and then continues anyway. Most automated sandboxes have shorter analysis windows than that, so the sample looks benign and gets scored clean, this reduces the likelihood of the malware being fully observed in automated analysis pipelines. Rather than fighting the sandbox, it simply waits it out.
