Jargon Buster Open Source Intelligence OSINT

What does OSINT stand for

Ray defines OSINT

Sophisticated threat actors use OSINT to help them design Phishing, Spear Phishing and Whaling attacks and the use of OSINT improves their chances of success in hacking an organisation or individual. OSINT is used as part of  JUMPSEC’s Social Engineering Assessment and gives clients a view of all of the information that can be of use to an attacker

In our tenth Jargon buster Ray Wellend explained what Phishing, Spear Phishing and Whaling are. This week Ray describes what OSINT is.

Video transcript:

“OSINT stands for Open-source intelligence. OSINT is data collected from publicly available sources to be used in an intelligence context. In the intelligence community, the term “open” refers to overt, publicly available sources (as opposed to covert or clandestine sources).”
