When is anonymous data not anonymous?

Our health records are one of the most sensitive kinds of personal information and yet we are nowhere near affording effective and appropriate attention to their security and privacy, as this excellent talk by Professor Ross Anderson, Professor of Security Engineering at the University of Cambridge illustrates (audio and video here). He concludes the talk thus:

“When you discover that a paraplegic Canadian woman was denied entry to the USA after a border guard accessed a database that revealed she’d once been suicidally depressed, it’s easy to see how you – or someone you love – might suffer far-reaching consequences even from accurate data used for the purpose for which it was intended.”  – Cory Doctorow, Guardian, Source: here

formal complaint to the Information Commissioner has been made.
